The Gardening Season Begins

After a busy October, full of park tours and events, November brings the beginning of the planting season. Be sure that you don’t miss the plant sale of the California Native Plant Society, San Gabriel Mts. Chapter on November 8th!

The Weeds Are Here!

During this month’s volunteer day we will focus on weeding, pruning, and possibly some planting. After the unusual October rain I was hoping for a stretch of dry heat to help control the weeds in the park. Well, we are in it right now! It will be interesting to see whether some of the early weeds will dry up, though I suspect the weedy grasses are here to stay. In any event, we will focus on removing as many weeds as we can before they have a chance to go to seed.

October Events

October was a busy month. We held two park tours, both in collaboration with  Watershed Coordinators of the Upper LA River (ULAR) Safe Clean Water Program. On October 13th we met with Watershed Coordinators Alonso Garcia and Kristina Kreter to discuss the Safe Clean Water Program and to show them around the park. On October 23rd, Adi Liberman, also a Watershed Coordinator, sponsored a public tour. Residents of South Pasadena attended, along with officials from Pasadena,  North East Trees, Stantec and the LA County Department of Public Works. Unfortunately no one from our city was present. 

Other Happenings

Volunteers worked hard in October, and the park looked spiffy for the tour and the South Pasadena Beautiful Annual Meeting and Plant Swap. A group of around 20 students from San Gabriel High School Key and Environmental Club joined other members of the community. Here’s just a small idea of how much our wonderful volunteers accomplished. 

Doesn’t the upper entrance look beautiful? We’re still hoping for a sign on Pasadena Avenue so that people will know that the park exists.

South Pasadena Beautiful Annual Meeting and Plant Swap

And finally, on Saturday, October 25th South Pasadena Beautiful held its Annual Meeting and Plant Swap. The event included a plant swap and raffle. In addition, Angelo Gladding, SPB Board Member and Friends of the Nature Park volunteer, spoke about the upcoming changes to the city’s Tree Ordinance. We await the new draft that should be presented at the November city council meeting. (See the video of the October 1st meeting during which the city council heard the second reading of the amended tree ordinance, Item 18, changed to 4b, – starts at 32:45).

Volunteer Days

Where: South Pas Nature Park, 100 block of Pasadena Ave, east of York Blvd Bridge. Street parking is available on Pasadena Ave for the upper entrance, and in the parking lots near the golf course by the lower entrance. Meet in the park near the lower entrance, next to the recreational path.

Nature Park volunteers should: 

  • Wear sunscreen, hat, sunglasses
  • Bring plenty of water
  • Bring gardening gloves and tools (weeders, trowels, whatever you use in your own garden), there are extra tools and gloves for those who need them
  • Wear comfortable work clothes, including work shoes (sneakers or boots) and long pants
  • Face mask is recommended – helps with allergies and dust
  • Bring binoculars for birdwatching (optional)

Children must be under adult supervision at all times. There is poison oak in the park that we will point out before starting. Also, if you are expecting a group of 10 or more, please email us at hello@southpasnaturepark.org so that we can have enough tools.
