Home of a Future Southern California Forest

The eastern portion of the Nature Park has been neglected for far too long, but we are finally ready to help it transistion from a wasteland to a shady, forested sanctuary. With the help of Katherine Pakradouni of Seed to Landscape, and support from South Pasadena Beautiful, Friends of South Pasadena Nature Park is excited to announce the planting of a micro-forest. 

Here is a picture of the future woodland taken in September 2007. A chainlink fence separated it from the park and surrounded the weedy, degraded .6 acre plot so it was not useful to anyone or anything. 
Volunteers planting the central part of the park in January 2012. The area is now a vibrant coastal sage scrub habitat, though many hours of weeding and watering have been required.

Since the start of Friends of SPNP in 2006, we have planted most of the 4-acre park. However, following up with the necessary weeding and watering has been challenging for our small volunteer group. We are hoping that the micro-forest technique of closely planting an appropriate selection of native trees, shrubs and perennials will speed the development of habitat, while reducing the amount of work during establishment. Our team met today to lay out the outline of the planting area. It will be approximately 1,000 square feet.

On Saturday, Dec. 20th, volunteers will clear the area of mulch in preparation for planting in the early months of 2026. We are also planning to hold a Micro-forest Workshop during which participants will learn about the method and how it may help us create better habitat throughout our urban region. Stay tuned for more information on upcoming events.

Volunteer Days

Where: South Pas Nature Park, 100 block of Pasadena Ave, east of York Blvd Bridge. Street parking is available on Pasadena Ave for the upper entrance, and in the parking lots near the golf course by the lower entrance. Meet in the park near the lower entrance, next to the recreational path.

Nature Park volunteers should: 

  • Wear sunscreen, hat, sunglasses
  • Bring plenty of water
  • Bring gardening gloves and tools (weeders, trowels, whatever you use in your own garden), there are extra tools and gloves for those who need them
  • Wear comfortable work clothes, including work shoes (sneakers or boots) and long pants
  • Face mask is recommended – helps with allergies and dust
  • Bring binoculars for birdwatching (optional)

Children must be under adult supervision at all times. There is poison oak in the park that we will point out before starting. Also, if you are expecting a group of 10 or more, please email us at hello@southpasnaturepark.org so that we can have enough tools.
